The Baseball Club of Chatham (“BCC”) will hold tryouts for all U8-U14 baseball players who are interested in qualifying for a position on a Chatham Travel Baseball Team for the 2025 Spring only, 2025 Summer only, or 2025 Spring and Summer season. (NOTE: Chatham Recreation Baseball signups are separate and will begin in December)
Participants must register for the Travel Tryouts by clicking HERE:
https://registration.teamsnap.com/form/14638
If this is your first time using TeamSnap, it will ask you to set up an account for your child before registering them. A $30 participation fee will be charged which has to be paid before registration can be finalized. Registration will close on Friday October 18th at 11:59pm.
During the process, registrants must declare whether they want to be considered for a Spring Travel Team, a Summer Travel Team, or both. See below for more information on this important distinction.
The Travel Tryouts will occur on October 26th, 2024 in Chatham (schedule to be released soon after registration). The tryouts will be administered, and participants will be evaluated, by independent coaches and players from the Drew University Baseball Team. Candidates will be evaluated on hitting, throwing and fielding. Once registration closes, a more formal tryout schedule will be passed along to those who complete their registration on TeamSnap
Age Eligibility
PartThe Baseball Club of Chatham will continue to be an age-based program (vs grade based) using the April 30th cutoff. Therefore the “baseball age” is your child’s age on May 1st, 2025.
Date of Birth (Range) 2025 Program:
5/1/16 – 4/30/17 -U8
5/1/15 – 4/30/16 -U9
5/1/14 – 4/30/15 -U10
5/1/13 – 4/30/14 -U11
5/1/12 – 4/30/13 -U12
5/1/11 – 4/30/12 -U13
5/1/10 – 4/30/11 -U14
Example:
· If a player was born on April 30th, 2017, they are U8 in 2025
· If a player was born on May 1st, 2015, they are U9 in 2025
Candidates will be required to try out for the correct age-based team. These age requirements are completely consistent with the surrounding towns we compete against and match up exactly with the spring and summer leagues we join
U7 Travel Baseball Program
U7 is a Summer only program. There will be a separate registration and player evaluation for U7 in the spring of 2025. 2nd graders born after April 30th, 2017 will be eligible to play U7 baseball in 2025.
Team Formations
Team placement will be determined by a combination of 2024 coach evaluations and a tryout score from the Drew University staff. Attendance record will also be taken into consideration for players who played travel during the previous season. Coach evaluations are provided by both head coaches and assistant coaches, and evaluation scores are weighted equally across all coaches. Team formation for each age group does NOT involve any coaches or parents of players from that specific age group. Typically, a few teams of varying skill levels will be created within each age group in order to offer as many players as possible the opportunity to participate. In an average year, more than 300 players try out for travel baseball. Upon completion of the tryouts, it takes a few weeks for the scores to be reviewed and teams to be formed.
Spring/Summer Distinction IMPORTANT!!
Please note that by selecting to register for “Spring Only” or “Summer Only” a candidate MAY be placed on a team with players across a wide range of abilities. Those players selecting both Spring AND Summer will likely be grouped with players of similar skill levels. The number of teams formed will depend on a variety of factors, namely headcount and field availability. All tryout participants must review the Travel Team Policy for important information concerning the relevant factors considered by BCC when extending invitations to join a Travel Team and the commitment expected of those who participate in tryouts. BCC expects to extend invitations sometime in November.
If your child is chosen for a travel team, you will be required to also play in the Chatham Recreation Baseball League. This is mandatory. Those who habitually miss recreation events, could be suspended from travel games.
Cuts
Teams will be formed using a roster size that promotes player development and significant playing time. All candidates should enter this process knowing that roster space is limited, and cuts are likely. In an ideal situation, we will have the perfect number of candidates for three teams. In the past, we have gone to great lengths to limit the number of cuts. However, every year there are a number of candidates we are unable to place on teams. This is obviously a challenging issue for those who do not make a team, so we ask that you have this discussion with your child before trying out. Rec baseball signups start in December (subject to change) where everyone who would like to play rec baseball has the opportunity. Please ensure anyone trying out understands cuts are likely.
Coaches
We are 100% a volunteer organization. Every member of the committee and every coach commits a significant amount of time and effort for the benefit of the players. We ask that all parents respect the coaches’ decisions regarding the team, and help to make the experience of playing baseball a positive one for the kids. If you would like to volunteer your time as a coach, please let us know. On that note, team formations are done before the coaches are selected. Once teams and head coaches are determined, assistant coaches will be added. Thank you to anyone who volunteers their time to coach the players, and to advance the success of the program.
Payment: Anyone with an outstanding balance with the baseball club will not be allowed to try out for a team.
